Upper Southampton SEPTA Regional Rail Station

The proposed SEPTA Southampton Station could potentially be located at the existing station site at Second Street Pike & Knowles Avenue. There are many locations from which additional parking can be added. This station could be a potential park-and-ride location.

Benefits

  • Station located in close proximity to (3) medium density condominium developments. Other single family developments within walking distance (1,250 feet) of station, potentially generating a significant number of walk-up riders.
  • Opportunity for public-private partnership: Improve utilization of existing parking lots on underutilized properties (Strathmann Lumber, Oskar Huber, Our Lady of Good Councel: up to 1000 cars with no new construction). Supports revitalization of central business district along second street pike.
  • Reduced traffic on PA-232/PA-132 & County Line roads. Southampton commuters no longer drive to Warminster or Somerton. Overall reduction in auto traffic through township through regional increase in commuter rail use.
  • Convenient access to commuter rail service for connection to potential Princeton/Hamilton express bus (and connections to New York) (a study for the express bus service is under consideration)
  • Preservation of Upper Southampton Township as a stable community.

A passing siding currently exists at Southampton Station which would allow trains to pass at this location. A platform would be located on each side of the tracks with a pedestrian crossing near the station building.

Locations such as the vacant Strathmann lumber yard could be considered for commuter parking. This now vacant lot would become a revenue generator for the privately owned business, Strathmann lumber. Ultimately, this arragement benefits everyone!

Residents from nearby developments such as Steamboat Station would be considered living in a valuable "Transit Oriented Development" with the return of train service to Southampton. This will have a significant postive impact on property values and the economy of Upper Southampton Township.

Belmont Station would like train service so much, they even installed their own rail tracks in front of the development for the "Belmont Spur"

Upper Southampton is currently underserved by SEPTA. SEPTA's best attempt is the Route 24 bus, which only serves reverse commuters from Philadelphia to the Southampton Industrial Park. Utlimately, restoring train service will get these buses off the road, the reverse commuters to their jobs faster, and serve Southampton residents who commute to center city.
